Inside Scoop 2.1: Our Community

In 2010, I wrote many 'Inside Scoops' about our Team and its processes, and some on plugin development.  However, as I was updating our Team Statistics for 2010, which display on many website pages, I realized there is one group of 'unsung heroes' we rarely mention - our vast community of developers.  We often hear about the many plugin and skin developers, but did you know there are also many developers who quietly submit translations, EPG grabbers, movie grabbers and patches to fix bugs and improve or add features to MediaPortal?

One of the main principles of MediaPortal, as stated on our About Us: Behind the Project page, is that MediaPortal:

"Understands development is a team effort and treats users as co-developers, which has proven to be the most effective option for rapid development"

Have we succeeded?  Can we do more?  You decide!  Read on to get the Inside Scoop on the current level of MediaPortal development by  Our Community , and give us your ideas how we can improve.

Fresh from the Forums: New skins coming your way

Finding it hard to choose from all the great community skins out there? Well, after browsing through the forum, it looks like this choice is going to be even harder in the future! Here is a list of some of the upcoming skins to enhance the great MediaPortal experience.

Music Section gets some TLC

For a while now the music section in MediaPortal has been crying out for a little attention.   Over the years the code had got more complicated and it was taking all our time to keep it ticking over.  Changing existing features or adding new ones was extremely time consuming and difficult.

Being a big music fan I decided it was time to grab the bull by the horns and get stuck in.  As we approach the release of 1.2 beta (scheduled for release 12 Februrary, 2011) I thought I would give you a taste of what you can expect.

Fresh from the Forums: Exciting plugin development

MediaPortal really is a great software. Even after using it for five years, I still discover new features. Combined with the fact that new features are constantly being added, I'm quite certain that MediaPortal offers one of the most feature rich media centers around.

Even so, we all want the old lady to do much more. This is where the strength and diversity of the MediaPortal community is displayed. This blog aims to present some of the less known, but exciting new plugins which really teach the old lady some new tricks.

Moving Pictures Social - An Interview with the People behind the Curtain

Social interaction is where all the buzz is at, and MediaPortal does not stay behind. Two of the most popular community plugins (Moving Pictures/MP-TVSeries) are working on integrating social aspects right now. Let's find out why you should be excited.

Today we'll hear from Travis Collins (TravisTX / ZealotSix) and John Conrad (fforde), known for their work on the Moving-Pictures plugin, to talk about their latest feature: Integration into an Online Platform known as Moving Pictures Social. Oh, and they developed that on their own too.

Support MediaPortal!

The team works very hard to make sure the community is running the best HTPC-software. We give away MediaPortal for free but hosting and software is not for us.

Care to support our work with a few bucks? We'd really appreciate it!
