Reporting bugs becomes a lot easier in 1.1.0 RC3
Our Bug Report Guideline clearly states that we need clean logs.
Ideally, you should not use any extensions at all while creating logs which show the issue.
As you know, this meant that you literally had to uninstall all your favorite extensions every time you tested and submitted a bug report.
Not anymore!
Based on a proposal I made, arion_p refactored the way our "MediaPortal Debug" shortcut works. You can find the Shortcut on the Windows Start Programs Menu under Team MediaPortal.
When you start the Debug Shortcut, now you will see 3 options:
- Report a Bug to Team MediaPortal
This will start MediaPortal using the default skin, and only plugins which were part of the release version you installed. No extensions will be loaded. - Report a Bug to a Plugin Developer or Skin Designer
Besides setting the log level to "debug", this option will start MediaPortal as configured, using all extensions you have installed. - Export all currently present logs
If MediaPortal crashes unexpectedly, or if you can not reproduce an issue nicely, then this option will simply export all the currently available log files.
So here we go.
All you need to do now, to create clean logs for a bug report is:
- Select the first option (report a bug to Team MediaPortal) and then press the proceed button
- Reproduce the issue inside MediaPortal
- Close MediaPortal. Your log files will be automatically exported to a zip file and stored on your desktop
- Attach the exported zip file whenever you start a new bug report or support thread in our forums to report a problem.
A positive side effect of this new functionality is that every user is now able to easily test if a certain problem only occurs when using extensions (maybe an outdated one which is not compatible with the currently installed MediaPortal version).
We hope this helps everyone to submit good clean bug reports. Then we can release MP 1.1.0 even sooner!
